Formed in 2007, the Bicoastal Collective is a contemporary jazz partnership that explores the variety of facets that comprise the modern post-bop jazz sound. Forged by Canadian trumpeter / flugelhorn player Paul Tynan and Grammy award winning American baritone saxophonist Aaron Lington, the Bicoastal Collective explores new sounds in jazz and improvised music by focusing on original compositions and melody-driven improvisations.

The Bicoastal Collective’s numerous albums are published by OA2 records and each has been met with critical acclaim. Sidemen featured on the Collective’s recordings feature such luminaries as Stockton Helbing (Maynard Ferguson, Doc Severinsen) Tom Luer (Grammy-nominee, Bill Holman, Gordon Goodwin), Corey Christiansen (Grammy-nominee, Origin Records Recording Artist), Wayne Wallace (multiple Grammy-nominee), Steffan Karlsson (Eddie Gomez Trio), Bobby Selvaggio (Kenny Werner), and many others.

Aaron Lington

Grammy award-winning baritone saxophonist and composer Aaron Joseph Lington. His performing and compositional credits include collaborations with the San Francisco Symphony, Maynard Ferguson, the BBC Radio Orchestra, the Count Basie Orchestra, Doc Severinsen, Bo Diddley, Gordon Goodwin, Randy Brecker, Joe Lovano, Jamie Davis, Tommy Igoe, Pacific Mambo Orchestra, Delfeayo Marsalis, and many others. In addition, he has won awards for both his playing and writing from Downbeat Magazine, ASCAP, and was the 2003 recipient of the Sammy Nestico Award. He has been recognized multiple times in both the Downbeat Magazine Critic’s Poll and Reader’s Poll. In 2015. he was named as a Silicon Valley Artist Laureate.

The San José Mercury News praises Dr. Lington’s playing as “revelatory… he obviously relishes the beautiful, blustery bark of his instrument…” and that he possesses a “…finely honed melodic sensibility…” Josh Davies from the International Trumpet Guild states that Lington “… [shows] a true command of his instrument with a very studied and soulful essence.” Cadence magazine declares “Lington and compatriots come up with a wonderful and totally American jazz sound, [resulting in] a solid mainstream set based on some sweet melodic improvisation.”

Paul Tynan

and composer, Paul Tynan’s “Creative Genius Shines”.

Music has taken Paul to thirty countries across three continents, including all the Canadian provinces and 47 states in the USA. He co-leads the “Bicoastal Collective”, with Grammy-winning saxophonist Aaron Lington. The ensemble is dedicated to performing new jazz compositions. Paul has released 15 recordings as a leader / co-leader on the Origin, OA2, Champion Version, Armored, and NohJoh Music labels. As a jazz recording artist, Paul has appeared on over seventy-five recordings, as a trumpet player, composer, arranger, and / or producer. He has received grant support from the Canada Council for the Arts, Arts Nova Scotia, the Nova Scotia Department of Culture and Heritage and the St. Francis Xavier University Council on Research for his creative output. Paul is a Full Professor of Music at St. Francis Xavier University, where he teaches brass, jazz history, and arranging. He has also served on the faculties of The Kathmandu Jazz Conservatory, San Jose State University, Chabot College, Nova Scotia Honor Jazz Program, and University of North Texas Summer Trumpet Workshop and is a past co-director of the Acadia Summer Jazz Workshop. He is currently the artistic director of the Antigonish Jazz Festival.
