About The Antigonish Jazz Festival
The Antigonish Jazz Festival was born in 2022 out of a town already steeped in jazz tradition. Antigonish has long been home to a vibrant jazz scene, anchored by the St. Francis Xavier University Jazz Studies program—one of the only full jazz degrees offered in Canada. Building on that strong foundation, the festival set out to bring world-class jazz to the community and quickly grew into one of Atlantic Canada’s most exciting cultural events, fueled by the enthusiastic support of both artists and audiences.
The festival has already attracted an impressive roster of talent over the years, welcoming internationally renowned groups such as The Headhunters (Herbie Hancock’s legendary fusion band), Toronto’s Avataar and Worst Pop Band Ever, the high-energy Shuffle Demons, and Texas jazz-funk innovators The Funky Knuckles and San Francisco’s Grammy Award-winning Pacific Mambo Orchestra. These headline acts are complemented with incredible East Coast favorites like Charlie A’Court, Doris Mason, Jon Hines, as well as ensembles from St. FX University and local high schools—blending marquee performances with community spirit.
With packed downtown venues, lively street buskers, and late-night jam sessions that stretch into the early hours, the Antigonish Jazz Festival has transformed the town into a hub of musical creativity each November. Its impact is already being felt across the Maritimes, drawing new audiences to jazz, inspiring young musicians, and forging stronger ties between local talent and the national scene.
What began as a grassroots initiative has quickly become a must-see event on the Canadian jazz calendar—proving that even in a small town, jazz can thrive on a grand scale.
